Book Review: The Naughty Secretary Club......

Hello Everyone,
It's been a few months since I did my last book review, so I thought today I would review one of my all time favorite craft books. The book is The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girl's Guide to Handmade Jewelry by Jennifer Perkins.

I discovered this book back in 2009 when I was getting books from the library. What caught my eye was not only the title but the awesome cover art. The art/photography in the book is amazing and I would have checked it out based on that alone. But since I was looking for a good jewelry book, I decided to check it out and I'm so glad I did.

Like I said before the book is by Jennifer Perkins and in the book she shows you how to make jewelry from everyday objects. To better explain what I mean here is a little paragraph from the book

" I like beads as much as the next guy, but there is much more to jewelry than just beads. I look at everything as a possible piece of jewelry , no matter how big or small. When you see something that catches your eye based on color or style, think to yourself: " Could this be drilled and made into something else? Could pieces of it be used to make a new piece of jewelry? " More often than not, the answer is yes." When I was reading this book back in 2009, I couldn't believe that you could use old keys, doll furniture, watch bands, paper clips, vintage toys and etc to make jewerly. I was fascinated by each project and love how bright and vintage looking each piece was.

One of my favorite things about the book is that the secretary theme is throughout the whole book. Like some of the projects are called " Thank You For Calling Bangles", "Pencil Pusher Necklace", "Ravishing Receptionist Sweater Clips" and "Quitting Time Headband".

Jennifer Perkins, does a great job explaining how to make the jewelry and the pictures are also very clear and easy to understand.  Also what I liked about this book was that each project had a skill level "First Day On The Job", " You Deserve A Raise" and "Running The Show". It made it really easy to chose a project, if you were a beginner.

One of my favorite projects in the book was the "Secretary Pad Necklace", this necklace was made out of beads and an old piece of doll furniture. I found this project to be super easy and so adorable that I had to try it. Lucky an antique shop in town had some doll furniture for sale, so I picked up a few pieces and made my version.

So I love this book and I think some of you guys out their would love it too. Jennifer Perkins also has her own blog, which you should go check out.

As always, have any of you read this book or do you have a craft book that you could recommend?

Enjoy,

  1. She was way ahead of the curve! A lot of the "found" items are popular for jewelry now, but I still think she has a unique perspective. I love the photography style, too.
